Christine Jones, Location Manager of Drysdale Funerals Nambour was recently awarded the Queensland Disaster Hero medal for efforts as a volunteer and her tireless work in organising the Boxes of Love.
The Boxes of Love shoe boxes are filled with new, donated goods such as stationery, toothpaste, tooth brushes, deodorant and soap to provide some basic necessities to families who have lost so much. The gift provides them with a measure of normality and dignity. Each box also contained a small gift as many children have been affected by the flood waters that ravaged the town.
Christine’s idea was to use the Nambour Safe Committee’s Box of Love project to help the families and communities in the Lockyer Valley affected by the floods. More than 300 Boxes of Love were then hand delivered to families in the flood ravaged Lockyer Valley.
Christine was honoured to receive the medal on behalf of others involved in the project. “The project would not have gained momentum without the enthusiasm of others”, said Christine.
“I have enjoyed working with Nambour High’s four school captains who have embraced the project as a simple and practical way to make a difference”, Christine goes on to say.
Also receiving the award was Annette Baker, President of the Northern Central Council for St Vincent de Paul Society.
